[Review] BEASTARS Volume 1 by Paru Itagaki

BEASTARS might be one of my new favourite series! I watched the anime earlier this year and really enjoyed it so I decided to pick up the manga.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Volume 1 was great. I love Itagaki’s unique art style, it’s very different to a lot of other manga I’ve read. It’s very subtle, in particular when drawing Legoshi, the main character. He’s probably one of my favourite characters now; he’s so shy and awkward. Even though the whole world expects him to be boisterous and aggressive (as he’s a grey wolf), he’s just a dork that cares about bugs and his friends. Itagaki’s art really helps to portray this too.

There are some extra comics at the back of this volume too which was a nice surprise! I’m guessing they’ll be at the back of the next volumes too. These ones gave some more info on the author and the world, also a character profile for Legoshi. Turns out the Itagaki watched Bela Legosi’s Dracula (1931) and loved his name so much it inspired the name Legoshi. How cool!
