I haven’t done a reading update in a while, mostly because I haven’t been reading very much recently. Now I’m back at work and have a schedule again I should be able to maintain my reading habits.
As far as I’m concerned as soon as it hits September 1st Halloween has already started. So in celebration of the spooky season I’ve been reading some horror related books.
For non-fiction I’ve been reading The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharis. This is a Penguin History title and follows the gruesome medical advancements made during the Victoria era. I’m a couple chapters in and it’s been fascinating to read and full of morbid details.
Initially I was thinking of re-reading Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice but decided to try out some of her werewolf novels instead. The Wolf Gift is the first in Rice’s werewolf series. I’ve read a good chunk of it and am still waiting for some werewolf antics to start, but there have been some mysterious disappearances so far and that’s been very interesting.
I’m still reading Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir and am only 165 pages in, despite starting it last month. It’s very good but I sort of ended up in a bit of a reading slump and put it down for a couple weeks. Gideon the Ninth is a science fiction about lesbian necromancers exploring a haunted mansion in space! I’m hoping to have it finished by the end of the month so I can pick up the paperback of Harrow the Ninth which just came out.
For manga I’m re-reading Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) by Yana Toboso for the first time in 7 or 8 years! I think I read up to volume 16 and now volume 30 has just been released, so I have a lot of catching up to do. I’m thinking of reviewing them 3 volumes at a time as sometimes I struggle to write insightful and entertaining reviews for just 4 chapters (there’s usually 4 chapters per volume).
